Giclee Explained
What is Giclee?
Almost as important as the art itself is the method of reproduction. Giclee is a method of printing high quality artwork known for unbeatable longevity at an impressive value. Rose Marie recommends Giclee prints on archival canvas or etching paper.
It is French (zee-clay), meaning, “that which is squirted or sprayed.” The process is different than other printing processes yet works much the same way as an inkjet printer. Rather then dye, they use pigment inks that will achieve vivid colors with high accuracy to the slightest detail.
What is great about Giclee printing?
You can print on canvas or paper, as long as it’s archival. It can accurately mimic the look of any medium, whether it’s watercolor, pastels, acrylic or oil paint. Giclee prints can be resized to be made large scale, or any size you desire.
Another great part about Giclee printing is their extreme longevity. If you want your art to last a lifetime or more, this is the way to go. Your artwork will be resistant to fading, or any discoloring and last up to 100 years or more.
One the best parts about Giclee is that it is more affordable than original artwork. Where the cost to purchase an original painting my be prohibitive for most people, you can expect to pay much less for Giclee, usually about 1/3 the price. Another advantage about buying limited edition Giclee prints is that they usually increase in value over time because of their premium quality and rarity. They typically become more valuable as the artist becomes more well known, or passes away, so they’re definitely worth collecting.
